A client planned a pentagon shower enclosure in a corner of a bathroom in London. On the left, the client planned a vanity unit with a bespoke marble basin, but on the right, a toilet. These items blocked both sides, so the only access to the shower could be from the corner between them. The decision was to use a pentagon-shaped shower tray, also known as a diamond-shaped one.
A pentagon shower enclosure works by positioning three glass panels at special angles to each other in a bathroom corner. We had to use special 135-degree hinges because regular hinges wouldn't work for this shape. The door will operate outwards since there isn't enough room inside the shower.
Small UK bathrooms often have limited space, making pentagon-shaped enclosures popular. The handy thing is that the door always opens towards the centre of the room. With the door in the middle, you can fit other bathroom furniture right up against the shower sides without any problems.
Here we've opened the door to about 45 degrees, but it can actually swing much further. It opens a full 90 degrees and stops perfectly in front of the toilet without hitting it. The door's opening to the centre of the room demonstrates the effectiveness of the pentagonal design in tight spaces.
It's brilliant for small bathrooms where you have obstacles on both sides of the shower tray. Traditional shower enclosures would take up far more space. You could use a square shower tray with sliding doors instead, but that would stick out much further into the room. The pentagon shape keeps everything neat and compact.
The client had chosen lovely dark gunmetal fittings throughout the bathroom – the showerhead, drains, taps, and controls all matched beautifully. The problem was that none of our suppliers made the 135-degree hinges in the same gunmetal finish. We had to improvise with a custom solution to match the metal finish.
We used standard stainless steel hinges and had them PVD coated in the same gunmetal colour. Then we ensured that every single metal part matched – the wall channels, both hinges, and even the small reinforcement bar at the top. It took extra time and resulted in a significant price increase, but the outcome was a perfect match.
This wide view shows you the entire bathroom, allowing you to see how compact it is while still featuring all the essentials. The soft, pastel colours on the walls and floors complement the frameless shower design perfectly. It all comes together to make the ensuite feel light and airy despite the small space.
We used tine door seals and a 50 mm polished hole instead of a metal handle for the frameless design. You can see there's a small reinforcement bar at the top. We'd much prefer to remove it for a cleaner look. However, the reinforcement bar must remain in place because it provides support for the fixed panel, which holds the door and lacks any support from the floor.
